A "next step" husky experience through a remote landscape of mountains, valleys and glaciers
Winter 2026: Bookings are now open for winter 2026. We recommend booking immediately if you wish to travel next winter. There are just 3 tour dates for this experience and max. group size is just 3 persons.
Do you have previous experience of multi-day dogsled tours and are looking for the next challenge? If so, Mountain Dogsled Expedition in Lapland may be the ideal option for you!
This tour takes you through a majestic mountain world with glorious scenery, driving your own dogsled on a circular route that brings you north towards the Norwegian border, turning east through mighty mountains and valleys to Kvikkjokk, before heading south to complete the circuit.

This remote and little-visited region offers a stunning and varied landscape to discover by dogsled. Photo: LND.
From Jäckvik towards the Sulitelma Glacier and east through the mountains
As with any mountain adventure, the itinerary and route taken is subject to variation depending on conditions and there are a number of possible trail and route options, but you will typically begin your tour with a transfer to the start point at Jäckvik, in the foothills of the mountains near Pielekaise National Park, with wild winter camping on your first night out.

The dogs are always the stars of the show, and caring for your husky team is the top priority. Photo: LND.
From here, you head north towards Norway, sledding though the mountains and across Lake Mavas to reach Pieskehaure, where the Swedish Tourist Association cabin offers simple accommodation for the night and the chance for sauna. In good weather, you can see the mighty Sulitelma Glacier, which spans the border between Sweden and Norway.
Turning east brings you over the mountains, past Vaimok and through the beautiful valley of Tarredalen in the Padjelanta mountain range, before reaching Kvikkjokk and turning south back towards the start point for transfer to the kennels.

Tours up to mid-April give very good chances for Northern Lights. Photo: LND.
Adventurous sledding with overnights in wilderness cabins and wild camping along the way
Distance covered will vary depending on weather and trail conditions and the planned route, but you will typically be sledding around 50km per day, driving your own dog team with 5-6 huskies.

Wild winter camping adds an extra dimension of challenge and adventure to the experience. Photo: LND.
The plan is to spend some of the nights wild camping in expedition tents, where you will need to melt snow for water (or collect from the lake if camping near an open water source), and some nights in wilderness cabins, with no electricity or running water but the comparative "luxury" of a simple bed and place to cook.
The cabin at Piekeshaure has a sauna, so if staying there, you have the opportunity to soothe your tired muscles after a day of mountain mushing!

Simple wilderness cabins offer shelter for some nights of the tour. Photo: LND.
The standard itinerary will feature 5 days of sledding, beginning on Day 2 and returning to the kennels on Day 6. Day 7 is a "contingency" day - the Swedish mountains are unpredictable and it's not uncommon that storms or other challenging conditions may mean that an extra day is required to complete the route.
If necessary, then, you may be "out" for 6 days, returning to the kennels on Day 7. If all goes smoothly, Day 7 is a chance to relax at the end of the tour, let the impressions of your adventure sink in and perhaps try some different activities such as snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice skating or snowmobiling, before leaving Swedish Lapland with some very special memories.
Getting Involved
As with all our dogsled tours, you will be involved in all aspects of the trip, and this is very much part of the experience. You will assist with caring for your dog team, including harnessing, feeding (and, yes, picking up poo!), as well as tasks around camp such as fetching water, chopping wood, preparing food, washing up, etc.

Itinerary »
NB: The below is a preliminary itinerary and actual route may vary significantly due to weather conditions, access to trails and seasonal changes.
Day 1: Arrival
To reduce the number of transfers on arrival day, as guests may be arriving at different times, transfers will be coordinated depending on the travel plans of other guests in the group. If guests are arriving with separate connections up to 2-3 hours apart, you may be asked to wait at your arrival point so that transfers can be combined.
Arrive by domestic flight to Arvidsjaur or night train to Jörn for transfer to the kennels (transfer time approx. 40 mins from both locations). Transfers will meet connections as follows:
- Arvidsjaur airport: Morning Populair flight from Stockholm arriving 10.50 or evening flight arriving 19.20. Where afternoon flight arrivals are available, transfer from these flights is also possible.
- Jörn train station: Night train from Stockholm arriving 09.20 or day train arriving 15.37.
If arriving early in the day, please note that your accommodation may not be ready for check-in, as there may be other guests departing that day. You are welcome to store luggage. Lunch this day is not included but provisions are available to purchase from the store near the guesthouse if required. There are no organised activities this day, but you are welcome to borrow snowshoes from your local hosts for self-guided tours in the surrounding area. Alternatively, the village where the guesthouse is located has an ice rink and cross country ski equipment is also available to hire.
If all guests arrive in time, you may already begin preparations for the tour with packing and issuing of equipment. Otherwise, this will be done the following morning.
Dinner together in the evening and a chance to discuss the week of mushing ahead. Accommodation for tonight (also Day 6 and Day 7) is in the comfortable guesthouse 5 mins from the kennels.
Day 2: Into the wilderness for the start of your dogsled tour
You'll make an early start as your adventure is waiting for you! If there was not time to make preparations for the tour the day before, you will get everything ready this morning, packing the sleds and organising your clothing and equipment.
When ready, you will be transferred along with the dogs and sleds to the start point, which may vary depending on the planned route but is typically at Jäckvik, 2.5-3 hours' drive from the kennels. The drive offers a good opportunity to discuss the expedition ahead and ask any questions.
Once at the start, you harness the dogs and set off into the wilderness! The terrain for this day is fairly moderate, with no steep ascents or descents, but the sleds will be heavy at the beginning of the tour and you may still find the going demanding.
You will camp wild for the first night to offer more flexibility for the distance covered this day and where to overnight. As always, the priority is to care for and feed the dogs. Depending on where you have camped, you may be able to collect water from a lake or may need to melt snow to prepare dinner for the dogs and also for water for drinking and cooking for the group.
In the evening, the dogs will get an extra snack and maybe a massage, before it's time to retire to your tents for your first night in the mountains.
Day 3 to Day 6 (possibly Day 7): Your mountain dog sledding expedition continues
Over the next days, you will normally cover a circular route, heading north to the Swedish Tourist Association cabin at Pieskehaure, with views of the Sulitelma Glacier in good weather, then east across the mountains and through the valley of Tarredalen to Kvikkjokk before turning south.
You will be sledding through valleys and over mountains and frozen lakes, with a number of ascents and descents and possibly challenging and changeable weather and trail conditions.
Typical daily distances are around 50km, perhaps less in challenging conditions or more in good conditions. The intention is to spend some nights winter camping and some nights in wilderness cabins along the route. There may be the possibility for sauna at one of the cabins, though this cannot be guaranteed as the itinerary is very flexible.
Day 6 (Day 7 if contingency day is required)
Your last day of sledding brings you back to the start point at Jäckvik for transfer back to the kennels, where you take care of the dogs before enjoying a well-earned hot shower and dinner.
Contingency day: The intention is that is Day 6 will be the last day of sledding. However, conditions in the mountains can be challenging and unpredictable, and it is not uncommon that an extra day may be required to complete your dogsled tour. For example, if there is a storm, it may be necessary to wait a day in one of the cabins until conditions are more favourable, or progress may be slower than anticipated if the snow is fresh and deep. If the contingency day is required, you will therefore spend an extra day and night on the expedition, returning to the kennels on Day 7.
Day 7: Free activity day (if contingency day is not required)
If all has gone smoothly during your mountain tour, today the dogs rest after their working week. You have the opportunity to do the same, or to try some other activities. Free use of snowshoes is available for self-guided excursions in the surrounding forest. The village where the guesthouse is located also offers an ice rink for skating and cross country ski equipment hire. Alternatively, take the bus to Arvidsjaur for the day for activities there (arranged and paid locally). Possibilities in Arvidsjaur include snowmobiling or "ice driving" on a frozen lake.
Day 8: Departure
Breakfast and departure.
To reduce the number of transfers on departing day, as guests may be departing at different times, transfers will be coordinated depending on the travel plans of other guests in the group. If guests are departing with separate connections up to 2-3 hours apart, you may be transferred earlier to your departure point so that transfers can be combined.
If your departure is not until later in the day, you are welcome to spend time snowshoeing before transfer later. Alternatively, the village where the guesthouse is located has an ice rink and cross country ski equipment is also available to hire for self-guided tours in the surrounding area. Please note that you will need to check out of your accommodation, as there may be new guests arriving this day. Lunch this day is not included but provisions are available to purchase from the store near the guesthouse if required.
Transfers will meet connections as follows:
- Arvidsjaur airport: Early morning Populair flight to Stockholm departing 06.55 or afternoon flight departing 16.00.
- Jörn train station: Day train to Stockholm departing 10.30 or night train departing 19.17.

This experience is located in the far north of Sweden, one of the world's best locations for seeing the Northern Lights, and offers good chances to see a display for tour dates up to mid-April. However, it is important to bear in mind that the Aurora is a natural phenomenon and sightings can never be guaranteed in any location - it is not possible to search for a display.
