Five days of dog sledding with your own team of huskies in Swedish Lapland

Winter 2026: Bookings are now open for winter 2026. We recommend booking immediately if you wish to travel next winter. Max. group size is just 4 persons and availability is typically limited far in advance.

Are you looking for an extended dogsled experience which includes the adventure of sledding between overnight locations? Northern Lights Husky Week offers a wonderful combination of simple wilderness living and physical challenge with some nights of relative comfort and relaxation.

During the course of the week, you will be sledding for five days in total, spending four nights in modern cabin near the kennels with full facilities and three nights in simple wilderness cabins and winter camping while out on "expedition".

This is a fairly challenging tour for those with a sense of adventure, but with no previous dogsled experience required. With regular tour dates throughout the winter season, you can choose to experience the beauty of Swedish Lapland bathed in the magical colours of midwinter in January or with the promise of spring in the air in late March/early April.

Work closely with your husky team and fellow mushers

Max. group size for this experience is just 4 persons, making for a very personal experience. During the week you will really get to know both the dogs and your fellow adventurers, as you live and work closely together for each day's sledding.

The adventure begins with an introductory day tour from the kennels, typically covering around 20km, to learn the basics and gain confidence handling the sled and working with your dog team.

You will then head out for a 4-day/3-night expedition, with longer and more challenging days, typically sledding 25-60km per day depending on conditions. For these nights, accommodation will be much simpler - staying in simple wilderness cabins with no electricity or running water and winter camping in tipi or expedition tents along the way.

Exact arrangements vary depending on time of year, weather conditions and the route taken, but you will typically move to a new overnight location for each of the three expedition nights, and plan to spend at least one of these three nights winter camping.

When camping, this will be either in a large heated tipi suitable the whole group or using smaller, 2-person expedition tents.

Northern Lights in Sweden when camping

Whichever part of the winter you choose for your tour, there are good chances for Northern Lights - perhaps seen from your sleeping bag! Photo: LND.

Throughout the tour, you will be working closely with your team of dogs, harnessing them for each day's sledding and feeding and caring for them each morning and evening. While out on expedition, there will also be plenty of tasks to keep you busy, including collecting water in the evening (or maybe melting snow depending on the overnight location), chopping firewood, pitching the tents and preparing meals together with your guide.

An extra activity day to end the week

At the end of the week, after your five days of sledding, there is a "free activity day" to relax or discover more ways to enjoy Swedish Lapland in wintertime.

You may wish to use the snowshoes provided for a self-guided excursion from the guesthouse, or just take time to soak up the silence. Alternatively, the town of Arvidsjaur is easily accessible by local bus, from where a number of day activities can be arranged, including snowmobiling and ice driving.

When it's time to leave, you will leave with your head and heart full of impressions from the week - the friendliness, strength and stamina of the huskies, the tranquility and stark beauty of the Lapland winter landscape, perhaps the Northern Lights dancing in the night sky. It's farewell for now, but how long will it be until you return?

Getting Involved

As with all our dogsled tours, you will be involved in all aspects of the trip, and this is very much part of the experience. You will assist with caring for your dog team, including harnessing, feeding (and, yes, picking up poo!), as well as tasks around camp such as fetching water, chopping wood, preparing food, washing up, etc.

Itinerary »

NB: The below is a preliminary itinerary and may vary due to factors such as weather conditions, access to trails and seasonal changes.

Day 1: Arrival

To reduce the number of transfers on arrival day, as guests may be arriving at different times, transfers will be coordinated depending on the travel plans of other guests in the group. If guests are arriving with separate connections up to 2-3 hours apart, you may be asked to wait at your arrival point so that transfers can be combined.

Arrive by domestic flight to Arvidsjaur or night train to Jörn for transfer to the kennels (transfer time approx. 40 mins from both locations). Transfers will meet connections as follows:

  • Arvidsjaur airport: Morning Populair flight from Stockholm arriving 10.50 or evening flight arriving 19.20. Where afternoon flight arrivals are available, transfer from these flights is also possible.
  • Jörn train station: Night train from Stockholm arriving 09.20 or day train arriving 15.37.

If arriving early in the day, please note that your accommodation may not be ready for check-in, as there may be other guests departing that day. You are welcome to store luggage. Lunch this day is not included but provisions are available to purchase from the store near the guesthouse if required. There are no organised activities this day, but you are welcome to borrow snowshoes from your local hosts for self-guided tours in the surrounding area. Alternatively, the village where the guesthouse is located has an ice rink and cross country ski equipment is also available to hire.

Dinner together in the evening and a chance to discuss the week of mushing ahead. Accommodation for tonight (also Day 2, Day 6 and Day 7) is in the comfortable guesthouse 5 mins from the kennels.

Day 2: Introductory dogsled tour from the kennels

After breakfast, you'll meet the dogs and be shown how to harness your team and handle your sled, before setting off for your first dogsled tour.

Today's tour will typically cover around 20km and give you a good opportunity to gain confidence for the more challenging days to come. You'll return to the kennels for lunch and in the afternoon make plans for the expedition.

Days 3-6: 3-night expedition staying in wilderness cabins and tents

The expedition part of the week begins! After your practice and preparation the day before, you'll be ready to head into the wilderness for a 4-day/3-night dogsled adventure.

The route taken is flexible depending on conditions, typically with daily distances of 25-60km for these days, stopping for a simple picnic lunch outdoors during each day's sledding.

Accommodation for these nights will be in simple wilderness cabins (no electrity or running water, dry outside toilet) and in tents. Camping nights may use one larger heated tipi tent for the group or smaller 2-person expedition tents depending on temperature and weather conditions.

The plan is to move to a new overnight location for each of these three nights. Tours will typically spend two of the three expedition nights in wilderness cabins and one night in tents, but exact arrangements may vary depending on weather conditions, route taken and other factors.

In the evenings you will be participating fully in the tasks around the cabins/camp, such as caring for and feeding the dogs, collecting water from the lake or melting snow, chopping firewood, etc.

On Day 6 your sledding day brings you back to the kennels for a hot shower!

Day 7: Free activity day

Today the dogs rest after their working week, and you have the opportunity to do the same, or to try some other activities. Free use of snowshoes is available for self-guided excursions in the surrounding forest. The village where the guesthouse is located also offers an ice rink for skating and cross country ski equipment hire. Alternatively, take the bus to Arvidsjaur for the day for activities there (arranged and paid locally). Possibilities in Arvidsjaur include snowmobiling or "ice driving" on a frozen lake.

We recommend taking this day to try some different activities and make for a more relaxing end to your week, but if you wish, it is also possible to depart this day by night train from Jörn or domestic flight from Arvidsjaur.

Please note that departing early does not affect the price - the extra transfer to Arvidsjaur or Jörn will be offered in place of the extra night's accommodation/meals normally included in the itinerary.

Day 8: Departure

Breakfast and departure.

To reduce the number of transfers on departing day, as guests may be departing at different times, transfers will be coordinated depending on the travel plans of other guests in the group. If guests are departing with separate connections up to 2-3 hours apart, you may be transferred earlier to your departure point so that transfers can be combined.

If your departure is not until later in the day, you are welcome to spend time snowshoeing before transfer later. Alternatively, the village where the guesthouse is located has an ice rink and cross country ski equipment is also available to hire for self-guided tours in the surrounding area. Please note that you will need to check out of your accommodation, as there may be new guests arriving this day. Lunch this day is not included but provisions are available to purchase from the store near the guesthouse if required.

Transfers will meet connections as follows:

  • Arvidsjaur airport: Early morning Populair flight to Stockholm departing 06.55 or afternoon flight departing 16.00.
  • Jörn train station: Day train to Stockholm departing 10.30 or night train departing 19.17.

Good To Know »

Required

Health requirements/experience:

General good health and level of fitness and used to outdoors. No previous dog sledding experience required.

Min. age 18 (16 if accompanied by adult). Max. age limit 65 years (guests up to 70 years with suitable fitness are also welcome by prior arrangement).

Dog sledding can be physically demanding and to drive your own sled you must be able to brake the sled when going downhill and also assist the dogs during uphill sections by "scooting" or stepping off and running behind the sled for short distances.

You will normally be standing on the sled for a number of hours each day. Tasks around the cabins/camp (fetching water, etc) can also be physically demanding and you will need energy left for these and for caring for your team at the end of each day's sledding.

If weight >95kg, please contact us to discuss suitability. Clothing sizes S-XXL and winter boot sizes 36-46 are normally available.

What makes this "Medium+"?

This tour takes place from January to April, and temperature, weather and trail conditions can vary considerably at different times, affecting the level of challenge.

The landscape is typically flat or undulating, though there are some uphill and downhill sections. You will need to assist the dogs at times, especially in deep snow.

The tour features five days of sledding in total, including three "expedition" nights, when you will be staying in wilderness cabins and/or heated tents along the way. The expedition part of the week will typically be the most physically demanding, with simple accommodation and you will need to be used to living in close proximity with others.

NB: Perception of difficulty is very subjective. What is hard to one person may be easy for another and vice versa, depending on factors including level of fitness, age and previous experience. Weather conditions/temperatures can also dramatically affect the actual level of challenge encountered.

Equipment/clothes needed:

For information on any equipment and/or clothing included as standard for this experience, please see under "What's Included".

A detailed recommended packing list for personal items to bring will be sent with your booking documentation.

NB: We advise you not to buy equipment or clothes for your trip or to incur other non-refundable expenses such as flights until you have received confirmation of your booking from us in writing. Note of course that the most appropriate clothing to use as well as the level of challenge experienced during any outdoor activity may vary significantly depending on factors such as the time of year and the particular weather/temperature conditions during your trip.

Preparing for your trip:

For further reading, we also have a number of general information articles to get you ready for your trip, covering a wide variety of topics from what to do on a city break before/after your tour, advice on packing, eyewear for winter and considerations for female travellers.

This experience has no minimum. Scheduled tours are guaranteed to run from the first booking.

This experience is ideal as a private experience for small groups. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Eco Info

This provider has a written environmental policy.

Will I see the Northern Lights?

This experience is located in the far north of Sweden, one of the world's best locations for seeing the Northern Lights, and offers good chances to see a display during your tour. Wonderful displays are regularly seen on the tours. However, it is important to bear in mind that the Aurora is a natural phenomenon and sightings can never be guaranteed in any location - it is not possible to search for a display. The skies may be cloudy, there may be no activity, or you may be fast asleep after a day of adventure on the trail!
