Christine and Hugh travelled with us for Snowshoeing in the National Parks of Southern Lapland in February 2026 and very kindly sent us the following daily updates and photos from their tour. You can see more of Christine’s wonderful photos from her trip in the Facebook gallery for the tour.

Note: The tour is 8 days/7 nights with arrival + 6 days’ snowshoeing + departure. Day numbers below refer to the six days of snowshoeing during the week.

Snowshoeing Day 1

The light, the landscape, the changing nature, the infrastructure, and our guide have made day 1 so special. Fresh snow on Saturday and in the night, so a fresh 50cm on Sunday morning. Plus sunshine and some blue skies after coffee. The ancient forests and the late afternoon light was so relaxing. A good stretch, sauna, and dinner, so ready for Monday’s adventure.

Lunch at a warming shelter – pälvätupa. Firewood and everything is supplied by the national park.

Hot soup from our guides makes for a great lunch stop. Then the beautiful shapes and colours on the way back to our cabin.

Snowshoeing Day 2

I’ve never been walking in so much snow – the shapes and intensity of the colours. You are almost wrapped in the snow when you are off the trails in the ancient forests.

Many people think Finland is just flat and full of trees. The fells give some lovely views and the trees are different offering contrast and sculptures I’ve never seen before. The gentle uphills are easy to ascend and off a different perspective.

Snowshoeing Day 3

It is very tranquil here. We didn’t see a soul apart from our group. We were off any marked trails with our guide, Janne, who was able to identify the animals and bird tracks and behaviours. An outdoor lunch stop of hot soup and sandwiches in the sunshine – 5-star restaurant!

And using these great wide and short skis that just fit a standard winter snow boot. Skin-based skis. They were good fun, stable and a great way to travel.

And some beautiful shapes.

Snowshoeing Day 4

A trip to Posio and Riisitunturi Fell – 435m. Again, a different landscape with very big extensive landscapes over a frozen lake system and on up the fells. Big views in every direction. Not so enveloped in the snow today giving way to different shapes and views.

Being taken off the main tourist trails and exploring the 2 fells in the peace and quiet was very special. Again a 5-star open lunch stop in the snow gazing across the landscape with warm soup. Finland is very special.

Lots more different shapes today. You can see moomins everywhere!

Snowshoeing Day 5

Another peaceful day – light snow overnight and in the morning so no blue skies but plenty of beautiful powder and a lovely interesting snowshoe walk local to the cabin.

Snowshoeing Day 6

So our last day of our wonderful week in Finland with our guides, Terhi and Janne. They have taken us to some beautiful places and showed us different landscapes of South Lapland that we could not have done on our own. Their kindness, interest, and knowledge in their wilderness has been so enjoyable and made a real difference. As we live in the Highlands of Scotland and are active in the outdoors we normally arrange our own independent travel and outdoor exploring trips so this was unusual to book a guided trip – we are so glad we did. Highly recommended if a novice or an experienced outdoor person.

Some photos from today – didn’t see another soul. The ancient forest, little gorge, warming shelter for our lunch, and frozen pond were beautiful and peaceful. The landscapes and trees are both energising and have given me a sense of nurturing calmness. Seeing the Black Grouse was an added bonus today!
