Customer Reviews of Canoeing on the Tar Route in Kainuu:

"The adventure was beyond our expectations! It was so incredible to be outside, alone, admiring the sunset (and getting bitten by the mosquitoes). Having so much space and nobody around was quite new for us. The best part of the trip was the fact that we were completely alone, offline and just there to appreciate Finland and its gorgeous landscapes. Additionally the cost was affordable and the communication always great! Thanks a lot to our local host and to your support all the way." Oceane, August 2023

"Thanks again for a lovely holiday. The lavu camping facilities and freedom and every man's rights are absolutely liberating and lovely. Fabulous expansive landscapes and water were stunning." Georgina, August 2022

"The Tar Route gave us just the right amount of challenge. There were moments when we were a little concerned but these were short lived and we also had plenty of time to enjoy ourselves. It felt like an adventure, not a holiday, and that was exactly what we wanted. It gave my girls the opportunity to show me how brave, resilient and supportive they have become. I was extremely proud of them. Finland was extraordinarily peaceful. We never saw another tourist so always had campsites to ourselves. Facilities were immaculately well kept by the rangers and respectful fellow travellers. We saw forest caribou twice, a white-tailed sea eagle, a crane and great northern divers amongst other wildlife. Our host was a delight to meet, professional and helpful at all times. The equipment provided was appropriate, clean and in good repair." Adam, July 2022

"It was a lovely holiday. The cabin stay before and after the canoeing was particularly enjoyable. The sauna with the cabin was an additional pleasure. The host was very helpful and knowledgeable. Previous good experiences gave us confidence that this would be another successful holiday. [We really enjoyed] the variety - the options to camp or use cabins, especially the island sauna." John and Jenny, June 2022

"Staff were very attentive and responsive to our pre-trip questions. The local host was excellent. He answered all of our questions and was very reassuring. The equipment supplied was of a very good standard. The route itself was easy in parts and challenging in others. The lavvus at campsites were fantastic when it rained. The Tar Route rails at crossing places saved heavy portaging work and were a luxury compared to some other wilderness portaging in other countries. Canoeing on the Tar Route in Kainuu was a well set-up holiday plan with good support and good local host input. Wonderful wilderness hut option at beginning of trip gave us a chance to wind down from working life and hectic travel. It even had a sauna hut and a wood store with a lakeside fire pit with reindeer skins to sit on ! Magical place in the forest. Good equipment supplied and good maps. A group of 4 cranes flew low overhead calling to another which joined them. This was a special moment. What a fabulous trip. Thanks all at Nature Travels. I should add that although I have undertaken numerous open canoe expeditions in boreal forests this was the very first time my wife has joined me. She absolutely loved it and is keen to plan another." Steven, September 2019

"Like last year good service and good communication! Thank you again for this wonderful holiday Nature Travels Team! Would definitely recommend! The real remoteness that you can't find in many countries. The very nice and clean camp sites as well as the good fishing opportunities. The nature is so stunning and remote!" Fabian, August 2019

"Finland was absolutely wonderful. The nature and wildlife is breath-taking and the silence you experience when on the water and in the woods is so enjoyable. [The best part was] arriving at an island on the 3rd day where we could find a sauna and enjoy the weather on a sandy beach. Then closing your eyes and only hearing the sound of fire cracking, small waves and birds singing. I must say, we almost didn't want to leave that place." Nicolas, July 2019

"[The best parts were] the gorgeous scenery and beautiful, empty campsites." Gillian, July 2019

"We had a really cool time!! [The best part was] discovering camping cottages." Adam, September 2018

"The best part was the meeting with the wildlife." Donatello, August 2018

"It's beautiful." Lawrence

"Matt and I had a fantastic time on our canoe tour! Thank you so much for your help in organising it! [Pre-departure service] was a very smooth operation! I was most impressed. The best part was stopping off at the hut on Ränkänsaari Island - what a beautiful place! No suggestions for improvement - it was perfect! Would rather it hadn't rained on the fourth day, but not anything could have been done to mitigate that, hehe!" Aline

"The Tar route is much more than the website indicates - it's a fabulous route with a 'Canadian' feel in a nature reserve. [The highlights were] the remote 'feel' to the whole area and seeing woodland caribou with their calves and the fabulous facilities of wind shelters, saunas, and ready-cut firewood provided for free by the Finnish state. We extended for an 11-day trip and explored on a longer 100km route. Just a big "thank you" for such a great trip. [I chose Nature Travels because] used in past and provide great options and fabulous service." Mark. You can also read a more detailed trip report from Mark.

"[I enjoyed] the terrific beauty and hospitality of Finland and its people and the pleasant encounter with our local host. [I chose Nature Travels because of] professionalism, extended information on the website, total transparency and responsiveness with regards to e-mails. I'd like to thank you for your responsiveness and the client-friendly approach of Nature Travels. Pieter and I are still in Finland, digesting the unforgettable memories of our canoe experience. Pieter and I will certainly recommend your services!" Sammy
