Sea kayaking is a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors and Sweden provides world class coastal landscapes perfect for discovering by kayak. But what if you love the idea of a self-guided trip but don't feel you have enough experience or confidence in the water? Sea Kayak Tour with Skills Course in West Sweden is the solution for you!
Your adventure begins with a two-night stay at a comfortable, welcoming eco guesthouse beautifully located in the forest 20km inland from the coast. The guesthouse utilises natural materials with Scandinavian design, has its own waste water treatment system, generates the majority of its electricity from solar and wind power and uses ingredients from its organic garden in its provisions packages as far as possible.
Approx. 10 mins' walk from the guest house lies Lake Bullaresjön, where you will receive 3-4 hours of instruction in the basics necessary to paddle enjoyably and safely in the archipelago. The course will cover areas such as paddle technique and safety procedures, including capsize and pair rescue drills. You then have the rest of the day on the lake to practise the skills you have learned and improve your confidence.
Next morning, you will be transferred to the coast to begin your kayak tour. Your tour will normally start at Sannäs (most suitable start point may vary depending on weather conditions), kayaking north-west from there to head out into the beautiful network of islands around Havstenssund, camping wild along the way.
The duration, route and level of challenge of the tour are flexible depending on the wind and weather conditions, your own preference and the time you have available. At minimum you will spend two nights out on the kayak tour, but you can as many additional days as you wish to extend your trip!
On the end day, you will be collected in the afternoon at the end point (location for end point pick-up is decided at the start of your tour and depends on factors such as weather conditions and the duration of your trip) for return transfer and departure. Or why not take some time after your paddle tour to wind down with extra nights at the guest house? The surroundings offer a choice of hiking trails right from the door, mountain bikes are available to hire, and you can also go fishing, swimming, or canoeing on the lake. Or just take a stroll through the organic garden and then relax on the veranda...
All kayak equipment is provided, with both single and double kayaks available (double kayaks are ideal for those who would like more stability, those who wish to share the effort of paddling or for families). All food during the tour is included, with provisions packages provided for you to prepare yourself at the guest house and during your the kayak tour. Cooking and camping equipment can be added as optional extras.
West Sweden is one of the world's premier kayaking destinations, and this experience will provide you with the skills and confidence to make the most of your sea kayaking adventure in this beautiful region.

Minimum 2 adults (18+) required for safety reasons. Recommended minimum age 12 years. Minimum age to paddle own kayak 14 years.
Participants must be able to swim and be confident in the water. The skills course provides an introduction to basic techniques and safety procedures for kayaking in the archipelago, but the kayak tour component of the experience is completely self-guided and it is important that you are comfortable on the water in different weather conditions and enjoy the outdoors.
There are no strong tides or currents in the West Coast archipelago, though if conditions are windy the water can be choppy. Double kayaks are the most stable option.
What makes this "Easy-Medium"?
The main tour itself offers flexibility to vary distance covered and therefore level of challenge. The tour features wild camping but the experience also includes an introductory course and two nights in guesthouse before the self-guided tour begins.
NB: Perception of difficulty is very subjective. What is hard to one person may be easy for another and vice versa, depending on factors including level of fitness, age and previous experience. Weather conditions/temperatures can also dramatically affect the actual level of challenge encountered.
Ticks and TBE:
Note: Ticks occur mostly in grassy areas.
As in the UK and other areas, there are ticks in the Nordic forests which can carry diseases such as Borrelia. You should check for ticks at the end of a day in the outdoors. If you find a tick, remove it as soon as possible by pulling the tick out straight, carefully and slowly, with the tweezers as close to the skin as possible. Ensure that you do not leave any of the insect's mouth parts attached to your skin. Wash the bite area with soap and water. In the unlikely event that you feel unwell or notice anything unusual around the area of the bite in the coming days, consult your doctor.
As in large areas of mainland Europe, in some small, localised areas of the Nordic countries (mostly in the Stockholm Archipelago), the ticks are known to carry TBE, or Tick-borne encephalitis, and locals spending extended periods in affected areas often choose to vaccinate themselves. For more information and latest updates, please see Tick Alert. For current advice on TBE and inoculations for the area you are visiting, please consult your doctor or see Travel Health Pro. You can also see a map showing areas where cases were reported in 2016.

Note of course that the most appropriate clothing to use as well as the level of challenge experienced during any outdoor activity may vary significantly depending on factors such as the time of year and the particular weather/temperature conditions during your trip.
