Discover some of Norway's best MTB trails

Far above the Arctic Circle, almost at the very top of Norway, Finnmark is a paradise for mountain bikers, offering vast areas of wilderness to explore and some of the best trails the country has to offer.

Mountain Biking in Northern Norway offers a choice of three itineraries to immerse you in the experience of biking in this wild and beautiful region.

Mountain Biking in Northern Norway

Finnmark offers some of the finest mountain biking trails in Norway. Photo: GE.

Led by experience local guide, who knows all the best trails and will ensure that your trip is as fun, fulfilling and rewarding as possible, you'll explore some of the many trails around Alta, cross the Finnmark Plateau, and, if you have a little extra time available, journey to the very tip of mainland Europe to watch the Midnight Sun over the ocean at North Cape.

Accommodation during the tour is in comfortable canvas domes or apartment at the camp, and in mountain lodge up on the Plateau. For those journey to North Cape, you'll also spend a night in Honningsvåg.

Three itineraries for your perfect MTB adventure

With durations 4-7 days, choose the tour that suits you, from exploring the Finnmark Plateau to biking at the very top of mainland Europe:

  • Option 1: Mountain Biking Across the Finnmark Plateau (4 days/3 nights): A 4-day adventure showcasing some of the trail gems in the Alta Valley region with an overnight tour to mountain lodge on the Finnmark Plateau.
  • Option 2: Mountain Biking Expedition in Norwegian Lapland (6 days/5 nights): All the fun of Option 1 plus two extra days, heading west to the mountains and exploring the Alta Canyon.
  • Option 3: Midnight Sun MTB Adventure to the North Cape (7 days/6 nights): The ultimate trip! Explore the Alta Valley and Finnmark Plateau before heading north to bike at North Cape and watch the Midnight Sun over the most northerly point in mainland Europe. There's even a King Crab Safari on the water to complete the experience!

Bring your own bike or hire for your tour

You can of course bring your own bike if you wish, but full suspension Trek bikes are available to hire for the tour.

Extend your trip with extra nights

If you have time, we recommend you add an extra night or two in luxury canvas camping domes at the camp, providing not only a relaxing end to your trip, but also an opportunity to explore some more of the local trails self-guided if you still have the energy!

Itinerary »

NB: For all options, it is possible to depart Alta with evening flight on the last day of the tour, but we recommend you add an additional night. Please see under "Prices > Optional extras" for details. Itinerary for all tours may be subject to change depending on weather and track/trail conditions.

Option 1: Mountain Biking Across the Finnmark Plateau (4 days/3 nights)

Day 1: Arrival and Preparation

Arrival in Alta. Transfer is included from Alta airport to the camp (approx. 15 mins) and will meet flight arrivals up to late afternoon.

Check in to your accommodation before having an information meeting to assemble/adjust the bikes for your tour and go through planning and weather forecast for the trip.

Light evening meal of soup and bread and a short test tour with the bikes to check everything is adjusted correctly and working well.

Night at the camp before your MTB adventure begins tomorrow.

Day 2: Routes in the Alta Valley

The area around the camp offers many great biking routes, and today you'll choose some of these to explore. There are flow trails and more technical sections to discover. If suitable, the group may have a go at the first section of the OffRoadFinnmark race, an annual MTB event locally offering 150km, 300km and 700km routes, trying the mountain plateau section to the southwest of Alta.

There are a number of other route options which may be chosen this day, including Sonja Kristins Cocktail, Jorra Jungle, Baddomella, Sandfallet, Kaffemokka, Cover Trail and Dollarsvingen.

You will stop for coffee breaks long the trail and return to the camp for moose burgers for lunch! (vegetarian and other dietary options available - please advise your dietary requirements in advance)

After lunch, you will pack and prepare for your trip for the next two days, before dinner and night at the camp.

Biking time/distance: 4-5 hours/35-40km.

Day 3: Up onto the Finnmark Plateau

After breakfast, you take a vehicle transfer south to Masi, a Sámi village and the starting point for the ride over the Finnmark Plateau. Today you'll be following one of the legs of the OffRoadFinnmark 300km race.

The route begins with a fairly steep climb and many turns, before becoming flatter and opening up as you come onto the plateau with its rolling landscape stretching to the horizon.

Quad bike tracks lead north, offering wonderful biking terrain. You'll make a stop for lunch over open fire, before continuing with views of the coastal mountains of Finnmark to the north.

Your destination for the day is a Jotka Fjellstue, a welcoming and cosy mountain lodge, where sauna is available to soothe your tired muscles!

Dinner followed by accommodation in one of the cabins at the lodge.

Biking time/distance: 6-8 hours/50km. Your personal luggage will be transported to the lodge accommodation.

Day 4: North to Alta

Breakfast before continuing your tour, heading north towards Alta along a trail used for both the OffRoadFinnmark race and the Finnmarksløpet dogsled race, a 600km and 1200km event which takes place every year in March.

Today offers quite easy terrain, with lovely enjoyable flow trails, especially if the wind is behind you. The route ends with a wonderful single track descent to the Alta Valley before you bike along the river back to the camp.

Back at base, you can enjoy a shower and sauna before departing for Alta (the tour will meet flights departing Alta 18.00 or later). Alternatively, we recommend adding an extra night in the dome at the camp to make the most of your adventure and give a more relaxing end to your trip.

Biking time/distance: 5-7 hours/45km.

Option 2: Mountain Biking Expedition in Norwegian Lapland (6 days/5 nights)

Days 1-4:

As for Option 1 above, except that overnight accommodation at the camp on Day 4 is included, as your tour continues for another two days.

Day 5: West to the Mountains

Today you head west, towards more demanding terrain and steeper mountains. You'll be riding the Lakkonjarga Highway in Bognelvdalen Valley, a hilly track used by the local Sámi reindeer herders.

The trail starts steeply and you'll be "hiking" with your bike for much of it, but once you get above the tree line, you're in beautiful hilly terrain and a real contrast to the Finnmark Plateau landscape with stunning views of the glaciers and fjords around you.

You stop for lunch at a lovely cabin on the shores of Bognelvvannet, before taking a technical track down the valley. This part is quite demanding, but great fun!

You return to the camp for dinner and overnight in the apartment.

Biking time/distance: 4-6 hours/25km.

Day 6: The Alta Canyon

For your final day of mountain biking, you ride to the Alta Canyon, a beautiful area extending south-east through the plateau. It's a landscape of sheer rock faces with lovely views of the Alta river and birds of prey riding the air currents.

The tour beings from the lodge Suolovuopmi Fjellstue, following a gravel road over Beskades ridge. After 20km, you turn onto a path and the biking becomes much more challenging - at times a little too challenging, so requiring some walking!

You stop for lunch at the end of the canyon, followed by a long downhill stretch over gravel and tarmac to the wonderful Jorra Trail and the return to the camp.

Biking time/distance: 6-8 hours/60km.

Option 3: Midnight Sun MTB Adventure to the North Cape (7 days/6 nights)

Day 1: Arrival and Preparation

Arrival in Alta. Transfer is included from Alta airport to the camp (approx. 15 mins) and will meet flight arrivals up to late afternoon.

Check in to your accommdation before having an information meeting to assemble/adjust the bikes for your tour and go through planning and weather forecast for the trip.

Light evening meal of soup and bread. Night at the camp before your MTB adventure begins tomorrow.

Day 2: The Alta Valley

A great choice of mile after mile of trails await you today, including Sonja Kristin’s Cocktail, Jorra Jungle, Baddomella, Sandfallet, Kaffemokka, Cover Trail and Dollarsvingen.

You'll make a stop for a break with an open fire on the banks of the Alta River, with moose burger for lunch at the camp.

Accommodation in the evening at the camp.

Biking distance/height difference: 30km/500m.

Day 3: The Finnmark Plateau

Today you head for the Finnmark Plateau, with a number of routes possible, following the Sámi reindeer migration trains. Your local guide knows the trails well and will plan the best. In the afternoon you arrive at the mountain lodge Jotka Fjellstue, up on the plateau.

The lodge provides not only a warm welcome, but showers, sauna, washing facilities for the bikes and wonderful food!

Biking distance/height difference: 40km/600m.

Day 4: Towards Alta

Heading north, you make your way back towards Alta, on what will be a memorable day with stunning views of the mountains and fjords. The last 10km is a fantastic single track section, leading you back to the camp for dinner and night at the camp.

Biking distance/height difference: 50km/200m.

Day 5: Skaidi and Honningsvåg

The day begins with a drive of about an hour to Skaidi, where you will head out into the wonderful terrain where the Skaidi Extreme and Skaidi Fatbike races take place each year - a real paradise for bikers.

You're almost certain to see reindeer today, as the indigenous Sámi people bring the reindeer to this region for their summer grazing grounds.

After a lunch break, you continue to Honningsvåg, almost at the very top of Norway, where you stay the night.

Biking distance/height difference: 30km/500m.

Day 6: King Crab Safari and Midnight Sun Ride to the North Cape

No visit to Northern Norway would be complete without a King Crab Safari! Today, after a short look around Honningsvåg, you take to the water with local fishermen to catch King Crab, which will then be prepared for you for lunch.

Since the sun never sets, there's still plenty of time for biking, and in the afternoon you head for a wonderful tour to reach the northernmost point of mainland Europe, the North Cape plateau, 300m above the sea.

If the skies are clear, you will get the unique experience of seeing the Midnight Sun above the sea, before heading back for Alta. You'll be back at the camp between 01.00 and 03.00 in the morning.

Biking distance/height difference: 35km/800m.

Day 7: The Masi Circuit

After a late night last night, you take things easy in the morning, before heading out for your final day's biking and a spectacular end to the week. The Masi circuit is a 40km loop on the western part of the Finnmark Plateau, and part of the OffRoadFinnmark MTB race route.

Lunch over open fire along the way before returning to the camp.

Back at base, you can enjoy a shower and sauna before departing for Alta (the tour will meet flights departing Alta 18.00 or later). Alternatively, we recommend adding an extra night in the dome at the camp to make the most of your adventure and give a more relaxing end to your trip.

Biking distance/height difference: 40km/500m.
