Inspiration - Dog Sledding Kiruna and Abisko

An overview of our dogsled tours near Kiruna and Abisko in Swedish Lapland

Of the tours listed above, the first three begin from from Jukkasjärvi (20 minutes from Kiruna) and run in a lowland landscape of frozen lakes and forest. The two mountain tours begin from Abisko (1.5 hours from Kiruna) and run in a mountain landscape, using the King's Trail route for much of the tour.

Why choose Kiruna for a dogsled tour?

Kiruna has many advantages as a destination for dog sledding:

  • Sled in beautiful lowland landscapes of frozen lakes and forests close to Kiruna, possible throughout the winter season, or choose mountain dog sledding tours on the King's Trail starting from Abisko during the "spring winter" from February-April.
  • Travel to Kiruna is straightforward by domestic flight or night train from Stockholm.
  • Located in the far north of Sweden, approx. 200km inside the Arctic Circle, a dogsled tour in the Kiruna area gives very good chances to see the Northern Lights throughout the winter season up until around early/mid-April. Abisko has a particular microclimate which gives a higher than average incidence of clear skies, making it a particularly good area to see the Aurora.
  • Kiruna is an ideal option if you are planning to extend your stay with extra activities before and/or after your dogsled tour. The world-famous Ice Hotel is located nearby in Jukkasjärvi, Abisko Mountain Station is just 1.5 hours by direct train to the north, and there are a number of day activities available in Kiruna town.
  • While Kiruna town itself has limited tourist interest, it is a pleasant place to stay for a couple of nights and offers a range of accommodation. Kiruna's church was once voted Sweden's most beautiful.

How to travel to Kiruna:

There are no scheduled direct international flights to Kiruna, but travel from Stockholm is straightforward.

  • From Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) airport, regular direct domestic flights are operated by SAS and Norwegian airlines.
  • Night train is also an excellent way to travel. Night trains to Kiruna leave either from Arlanda C (the station at Stockholm Arlanda airport, meaning it is not necessary to travel into the city first) or Stockholm C (Stockholm Central station). There are normally two departures daily, one direct and one with a change. Travel time by night train is around 15-17 hours depending on connections.

For any of our dogsled tours in the area, transfers are included from/to Kiruna airport or train station in connection with the arrival/departure days of your tour. The kennels are located just 20 minutes from Kiruna. For mountain tours taking place in the Abisko area, transfer (approx. 1.5 hours) is included between the kennels and the start/end points.

Where can I stay in Kiruna?

Kiruna offers a range of accommodation options for extra night(s) before/after your dogsled tour:

  • Hotel Arctic Eden: Members of our team have personal experience of staying here and have found it comfortable and welcoming.
  • Camp Ripan: We have also stayed at Camp Ripan and they offer comfortable accommodation in hotel chalets and good food.
  • Hotell Samegåden: Budget accommodation. They do not have a website in English, but you can email them at kiruna.samegard@telia.com or call +46 980-170 29. Members of our team have stayed here and found it comfortable and pleasant, though of course of more basic standard than other options.
  • 68 Degrees: We have not stayed here personally, but this is a popular choice for our clients and we have had very positive feedback from guests.
  • Tommy's House: Again, we have not stayed here personally, but have had good reports from guests.
