Choose between a 4-day or 6-day private husky tour for two - perfect for couples who wish to experience the adventure of dog sledding combined with a romantic break (or honeymoon!) or for two adults travelling together, and with some creature comforts.
Kainuu in Eastern Finland is a region of Taiga forest and lakes, a varied and scenic area rich in wildlife and ideal for dog sledding.
Drive your own dogsled teams or, if you prefer, take turns to drive with your partner - ideal for chatting and taking pictures! Photo: RT.
You will be welcomed by friendly huskies and your hosts will share their wealth of knowledge about the local area - you can study the tracks of the resident wildlife as you explore the surrounding forest by dogsled.
There are six tour options depending on your preference for accommodation and tour duration. Any of the options can be extended with extra sledding day(s) overnighting at the kennels and/or extra night(s) at the hotel for a longer trip.
For itineraries including hotel nights, accommodation for the first and last nights of the tour is at a comfortable local hotel with spa facilities. Choose between standard hotel room or upgrade to the suite for extra romance!
- Option 1: 3 nights in cabin at kennels.
- Option 2: 2 nights in standard hotel room + 1 night in cabin at kennels.
- Option 3: 2 night in hotel suite + 1 night in cabin at kennels.
- Option 4: 5 nights in cabin at kennels.
- Option 5: 2 nights in standard hotel room + 3 nights in cabin at kennels.
- Option 6: 2 nights in hotel suite + 3 nights in cabin at kennels.
If staying at the hotel, you will be picked up in the morning for transfer to the husky farm, home of your new furry friends.

Sauna is available every evening both at the hotel and cabin. At the kennels there is a real focus on locally-sourced and homemade food.
The kennels are located in a beautiful area next to a lake and there are a number of trails which can be explored for each day's sledding tour with the huskies.
Your guide will help you learn the mushing basics before you set off to begin your dogsled tour into the surrounding forest.
Guests will normally drive own sled from the beginning, but it is also possible to share a sled one per two persons if you prefer, either just at the start as you gain confidence progressing to driving own dogsled later, or for the duration of the tour.
As a private dogsled tour, this experience can be very flexible to vary the level of challenge and to take account of the needs and preferences of different guests as well of course of weather and trail conditions.
This is a very personal experience where you will learn how it is to live like a musher. The husky farm is located on the lakeshore in the forest. Accommodation is in your hosts' house, which is a simple but cosy cabin, in private double/twin room with fireplace. The cabin does not have shower, but there is a wood-fired sauna for private use right by the lake, which also heats water and provides opportunity to wash. The intrepid can take a dip in the icy water of the lake right outside the sauna!
Your hosts as well as some of the indoor dogs live in the house. The husky farm has a real sense of timelessness combined with the modern facilities of electricity, running water and an indoor toilet.
Private Dog Sled Tours for Two in Taiga Forest is a wonderful mix of adventure, comfort, relaxation and (if you wish!) romance!
Sled dogs at the kennels
The kennel has around 22 dogs in total, with a mix of Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Huskies who have been bred for sledding and also a number of rescued huskies and mixed-breed rescue dog who have been been rehomed.
The majority of the dogs are very affectionate and sociable. Some of the rescued dogs may be shyer. There is a strong focus at the kennels on creating a loving environment for the dogs and providing a unique and very personal experience for guests.
The dogs at the kennels are fed largely on fish. Offcuts from a local salmon fish-farm make effective and nutritious use of a waste product, and the dogs' diet is supplemented with an overabundant species of roach caught by hand nets in the lake adjacent to the kennels. This not only provides a sustainable and low-impact high quality food source, but also contributes to the conservation of the lake ecosystem, as removing this species helps to reduce the disturbance of sediment and combats eutrophication of the water caused by local forestry activities.
NB: Please note that this tour can be extended with one or more extra days' sledding and accommodation in cabin at the kennels or with extra night(s) at hotel before/after your tour. Please see under "Dates and Prices > Optional Extras" for details.
Day 1 (Arrival)
You will be met from Kajaani airport or train station and transferred (approx. 90 minutes) either to your hotel for the night or the kennels, depending on tour option chosen.
- If staying at the kennels: Settle into your room followed by dinner with your hosts and chance to talk through the tour ahead. Traditional wood-fired sauna by the lake is available each night of your stay.
- If staying at the hotel: Unwind after your journey in front of an open log fire in the lounge and enjoy dinner at the restaurant (included). The hotel has free use of sauna and hot-tub facilities. Massage and other treatments are available to book locally.
Day 2 and following sledding days (Days 2 and 3 for 4-day itineraries, Days 2-5 for 6-day itineraries)
For guests staying all nights at the kennels, Day 2 begins directly from here. For guests beginning their tour with night at hotel, you will be met after breakfast by your guide at 10.00 for transfer to the kennels.
At the kennels, you will be given extra warm clothes and once you are ready, you will meet your team of huskies and your guide will take you through the basics of mushing until you are confident to start your dogsled adventure.
You set off into the surrounding taiga forest for your first day's sledding - there are a number of trails that can be used each day to take advantage of the best conditions. You will normally begin driving your own teams from the beginning, but if you prefer, shared sled options are also possible - you will have plenty of opportunity to discuss the most suitable possibilities for you with your guide and of course to change arrangements during the tour if you wish.
Your guide can help you learn to identify wildlife tracks such as wolf, wolverine, lynx and forest birds. As you progress and gain confidence, new trails can be explored, taking you further off the beaten track and experiencing traditional dog sledding on trails untouched by snowmobiles in landscapes of ancient trees and open peat bogs, where you may see wolverine tracks and birds typical to this forest such as Siberian Jay, Black Woodpecker and Capercaille.
Lunch is enjoyed outdoors with a hot drink and you will then continue your dogsled tour arriving back at the kennels in the afternoon. Once at the cabin you feed and take care of the dogs. If any of the huskies appear to be a little stiff after their exertions, they may be taken in for a massage!
You then have time to relax, talking through your day with a hot drink. A traditional wood-fired sauna next to the lake is available each night, before a roll in the snow if you're brave enough! You end your evening with a tasty dinner made with local ingredients.
Last day of sledding (Day 3 for 4-day itineraries, Day 5 for 6-day itineraries)
- Guests staying all nights at the kennels will spend the night there as normal after the day's sledding.
- Guests choosing itineraries including hotel nights will be transferred to the hotel after the day's sledding is over.
After breakfast (at the kennels or hotel depending on option chosen) you will be transferred to Kajaani airport or train station for departure.
