If you\u2019re thinking of going on a winter adventure with us, such as one of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/category-dog-sledding.htm\">dogsled tours<\/a>, and would like to travel a little lighter, here are a few ideas that may prove helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why go hand luggage only?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lighter on your pocket: <\/strong>For most airlines on short-haul flights these days, only a very small underseat bag allowance comes as standard with your ticket &#8211; additional overhead cabin bag and checked bags are charged as extras. But the combination of underseat bag and a cabin bag may well give you enough space without the need to check in an additional bag, saving you money and also streamlining your journey.*<br><em>*Occasionally on full flights where space is limited, some passengers, especially if you&#8217;re among the last to board, may be asked to put their overhead cabin bag in the hold when boarding. Though rare, this can be frustrating as you then have to wait to collect your bag at the other end, though of course you will still have avoided the extra cost of booking a checked bag.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Peace of mind:<\/strong> Most of the time, your luggage will arrive at the same destination and at the same time as you do. But occasionally problems can occur, especially if you\u2019re changing planes and have a tight connection \u2013 maybe you make the flight but your luggage doesn\u2019t! This can be a real inconvenience, creating unnecessary stress at the start of what should be a wonderful adventure. In some cases, it can create more serious problems which might even lead to you having to miss your tour \u2013 for example if you accidentally packed some essential medication in your checked luggage rather than keeping it with you. Travel hand luggage only and you\u2019ll be sure that everything you packed will still be with you when you arrive.<br><em>If you have to check in a bag, make sure that you are carrying all the essentials (such as medication or particular items of clothing you can&#8217;t do without) in your hand luggage so that you can still join your tour even if your luggage is delayed.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reduced-hassle travel: <\/strong>Checking in most of your luggage might make walking around the airport for a couple of hours before your flight more convenient, but you\u2019ve also got to carry it with you to and from the airport, maybe around town, on the tube or in taxis, or on public transport if for example you\u2019re taking the night train (as we hope you will) rather than flying. Reducing the amount you take should leave you a lot less emotionally frazzled at both the start and end of your trip.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A cleaner eco-conscience: <\/strong>The environmental benefit of flying hand luggage only might not seem substantial, but the combined effect of hundreds of millions of people travelling lighter could be huge. For each 15kg of additional weight (a fairly common weight for a checked bag), a plane will use around 0.5kg of additional fuel per hour \u2013 about an extra 1kg on a two-hour London-Stockholm flight. Photo: Nature Travels.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Any down sides?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Phew! <\/strong>You may not be quite as comfortable when actually travelling. For winter especially, you will probably have to wear that thick jacket or pair of boots that you would otherwise have packed down. And you\u2019ll probably have to stuff a few small things into the pockets of what you\u2019re wearing if there\u2019s no more space in your bag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A clean break: <\/strong>You may have to drop your hygiene standards just slightly (let\u2019s face it \u2013 you\u2019re on an outdoor adventure after all \u2013 who\u2019s really going to care if you have a small ketchup stain on your t-shirt for a few days?).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pack-light-winter-3.jpg\" alt=\"Available space in the sleds is limited anyway, so you don't need to bring too much with you.\" class=\"wp-image-968\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pack-light-winter-3.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pack-light-winter-3-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Available space in the sleds is limited anyway, so you don&#8217;t need to bring too much with you. Photo: Nature Travels.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>When I travelled to northern Sweden by flight London-Stockholm and night train Stockholm-Kiruna to take part in our 8-day\/7-night <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/husky-sledding-sweden-dogsled-and-camping-kings-trail-jv8dw3.htm\">Dog Sledding and Winter Camping on the King\u2019s Trail<\/a> tour, I travelled hand luggage only <em><strong>(note: this was a few years ago, before included baggage allowances for airlines changed when the overhead cabin bag was included as standard &#8211; these days, I would use the included underseat bag allowance and book one overhead cabin bag)<\/strong>:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here\u2019s what I took:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The great thing about dog sledding is that all specialist outer clothing (snowmobile overalls, warm hat, gloves, winter boots and sleeping bag) is provided as standard, which considerably reduces the amount you need to bring yourself. For this tour, towel and thermos are also provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I brought a 40 litre rucksack containing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Two thin pairs and two thick pairs of merino wool socks (merino wool is great not only for its performance properties but also because it can be worn for extended periods without any build-up of odour).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two sets of merino base-layer long-johns and long-sleeved top.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A warm woollen mid-layer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A pair of thin and a pair of thicker gloves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some changes of underwear (I\u2019m not going to tell you how many). Again, merino underwear is great for use on a tour of this kind.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A pair of ski glasses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal toiletries: toothbrush and toothpaste, a small tube of suncream, lip salve, a few First Aid items such as blister tape and painkillers. I left my shaver at home and decided to grow a beard for the week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A lightweight pair of shoes to use inside the cabins in the evening during the tour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> A pair of tracksuit trousers to use as a mid-layer when sledding if it was very cold and around the cabins\/camp in the evening.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> A power adapter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> A very small travel towel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pack-light-winter-2.jpg\" alt=\"You may have to forego some elements of modern living such as a shave if you're travelling light!\" class=\"wp-image-967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pack-light-winter-2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/pack-light-winter-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">You may have to forego some elements of modern living such as a shave if you&#8217;re travelling light! Photo: Nature Travels.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When travelling, I wore\/carried with me:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A pair of warm boots suitable for walking around in the snow before\/after my tour (so did have fairly hot feet on the journey!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Socks and underwear (obviously!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A pair of hiking trousers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A t-shirt and fleece mid-layer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A packable down jacket<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A small, waterproof lightweight day pack (an Exped drypack) for a few little extras to keep separate on the plane and when sledding, which squashes up to very little when not in use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the pockets of my jacket, I stuffed two Buffs, a thin merino beanie to sleep in and my \u201clucky dog sledding hat\u201d, which accompanies me on every trip (a mid-weight hat for a spare or in case the \u201cmusher\u2019s\u201d hat provided was too warm, as it often is).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A compact camera and mobile phone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When out on the tour itself, I left behind at the kennels the t-shirt, socks and underwear I\u2019d travelled in, the hiking trousers, the boots, the adapter (no electricity on the tour anyway!) and the 40 litre rucksack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>No packing list can ever be 100% right of course \u2013 however much or little you bring, there will always be something you wish you\u2019d included or left behind, and the particular conditions encountered on a tour can also affect enormously the actual clothing and equipment you will use.
