{"id":1827,"date":"2020-04-09T12:13:32","date_gmt":"2020-04-09T11:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1827"},"modified":"2020-04-09T12:13:34","modified_gmt":"2020-04-09T11:13:34","slug":"easter-in-the-nordic-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/easter-in-the-nordic-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"Easter in the Nordic Countries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>While Easter here in the UK may be mainly about rabbits and eggs, Easter is celebrated differently all over Europe and in the Nordic countries they have their own traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sweden and Finland, children dress up as witches and go visit houses in the hope to receive some sweets in exchange for a drawing or singing a song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019re not the scary witches you would see at Halloween, but kinder witches called \u201cp\u00e5skk\u00e4rringar\u201d (Easter witch) with headscarves and painted red cheeks!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/easter-2.jpg\" alt=\"Easter Witches in Sweden. These are placed on dining tables and in windows and are thought to help the spring arrive after the long winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/easter-1.jpg\" alt=\"Easter in the Nordic Countries. Photo: Nature Travels.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>They do also have the similar traditions of painting eggs and the Easter egg hunt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Nordic Easter eggs are not made of chocolate but from cardboard!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/easter-3.jpg\" alt=\"Easter in the Nordic Countries. With the Nordic focus on traditional crafts and on minimising waste, these \u201cP\u00e5sk\u00e4gg\u201d will be kept and reused for many Easters in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional Easter food, as for many special occasions, will be a sm\u00f6rg\u00e5sbord in Sweden or roast lamb in Finland and Norway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another tradition in Norway is to climb mountains (the Norwegians need little excuse to go outside and climb a mountain!) and watch the sunrise on Easter Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it marks the end of the winter in southern parts, the snow is still around for a while yet in the northern parts of the Nordic countries, with winter activities such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/category-dog-sledding.htm\">dog sledding<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/category-cross-country-skiing.htm\">ski touring<\/a> possible even into May in some areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s also the added bonus of milder temperatures and greater chance of clear skies so you can enjoy the beautiful contrast of blue skies and white snow!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happy Easter everyone, or <em>Glad p\u00e5sk<\/em> as they say in Sweden, <em>God p\u00e5ske<\/em> as they say in Norway, or <em>Hyv\u00e4\u00e4 p\u00e4\u00e4si\u00e4ist\u00e4<\/em> as they say in Finland!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While Easter here in the UK may be mainly about rabbits and eggs, Easter is celebrated differently all over Europe and in the Nordic countries they have their own traditions.
