Years ago when I first met my wife and tried to express my love in my fledgling Swedish, my attempt to say, \u201cYou are the thunder in my heart\u201d (we were watching a lightning storm at the time \u2013 rather a good line, I thought) came out as, \u201cYou are the thunder in my bum\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when it comes to English-Swedish mistranslations, the kitchen is a minefield, particularly when trying to unravel the difference (or not) between pepper, paprika and chilli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To avoid culinary catastrophe on your next holiday in Sweden, here\u2019s our guide to untangling the mess:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The English word \u201cpepper\u201d (the spice) is the Swedish \u201csvartpeppar\u201d (black pepper) or \u201cvitpeppar\u201d (white pepper).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far so good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the English word \u201cpepper\u201d (the vegetable) is Swedish \u201cpaprika\u201d (which can be \u201cgul\u201d, \u201cgr\u00f6n\u201d or \u201cr\u00f6d\u201d \u2013 yellow, green or red).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The English word \u201cpaprika\u201d (the spice) is also called \u201cpaprika\u201d in Swedish but is normally referred to as \u201cpaprikapulver\u201d (paprika powder) or \u201cpaprikakrydda\u201d (paprika spice).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/translation-chilli.jpg\" alt=\"Difference between chilli, pepper and paprika in Swedish.\" class=\"wp-image-1304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/translation-chilli.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.naturetravels.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/translation-chilli-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>What&#8217;s the difference between chilli, pepper and paprika in Swedish? Photo: Nature Travels.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As if that wasn\u2019t bad enough, the English \u201cchilli\u201d describing a dish (as in \u201cvegetable chilli\u201d) is also \u201cchili\u201d in Swedish, but\u2026..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026\u2026 the English \u201cchillies\u201d (the spicy fruits) can be translated as either \u201cchili\u201d or \u201cpeppar\u201d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So\u2026.next time you\u2019re in Sweden and you see \u201cpaprika\u201d, this might be vegetables or it might be a spice, and when you see \u201cpeppar\u201d, this might be chillies or it might be pepper!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phew! No wonder the British eat so much fish and chips \u2013 English \u201csalt\u201d is Swedish \u201csalt\u201d.
