The Elk

The Elk has come to represent the wildness and majesty of the Swedish landscape. It is the largest deer animal in the world, 2m tall and weighing up to 400-500kg.

The Swedish elk is a close relative to the North American moose, but slightly smaller. However, Sweden has a very large population of around 250,000, making it the country with the highest density in the world. Visitors have a very good chance of seeing an elk in the wild - and in Bergslagen, where elk outnumber the human residents, sightings are guaranteed! See Wildlife Guide

Go on a genuine Scandinavian adventure holiday and meet the king of the forest, the mighty elk. Your experienced guide will take you on an unforgettable journey through the dense forests of Bergslagen, a region known for its many little lakes, evergreen woods and amazing wildlife.

Bergslagen is the region where you are most likely to encounter wild elk in its natural habitat. During the tour you will get the chance to visit an elk home ground, a perfect environment to learn more about elk and the other inhabitants of the forest in a practical way. Your guide shares his knowledge of elk tracking and you will search for hoof prints, fresh droppings and bite marks. You will also be shown different ways of communicating with elk, some of which have been used in the region for thousands of years.

You will follow the most used animal paths to get to the nightly feeding grounds. Suddenly there is a crack! Was that an elk..? The hike continues through the woods where dark shadows reach for you and creatures hide just an arm's length away. And suddenly, a huge silhouette appears in the glade...it's the king of the forest!

The base camp is an attractive collection of genuine forest huts beautifully located by the shore of Lake Skarsjön. This is Sweden's most primitive hostel, where you leave the modern world and comforts behind and live in harmony with nature for a while. You will cut your own firewood for the evening's campfire and prepare a wilderness dinner together in the open. The ingredients for the dinner are inspired by the elks' own foods, with many of the ingredients collected from the forest.
