Kainuu in Eastern Finland is a region of Taiga forest and lakes, a varied and scenic area rich in wildlife and ideal for dog sledding. Choose between a 4-day or 6-day private tour for two - perfect for couples who wish to experience the adventure of dog sledding combined with a romantic break (or honeymoon!) or for two adults travelling together, and with some creature comforts.

You will be welcomed by friendly huskies and your guide will teach you the basics of mushing and share their wealth of knowledge about the local area - you can study the tracks of the resident wildlife as you explore the surrounding forest by dogsled. Sauna is available every evening, whether staying at combination of hotel and cabin at the kennels (4-day tour) or cabin at the kennels for all nights (4-day and 6-day tours). At the kennels there is a real focus on locally-sourced and homemade food.

There are three tour options depending on your preference for accommodation and tour duration:

Option 1: 4-day tour (hotel + cabin)

This 4-day/3-night tour (which can also be extended with additional sledding days and/or extra night(s) at the hotel for a longer trip) begins with a night at a comfortable local hotel with spa facilities. Choose between standard hotel room or upgrade to the suite for extra romance! In the morning, you will learn the art of mushing before starting your journey to the husky farm, home of your new furry friends. Your guide will help you learn the basics, initially driving a sled with you as passengers, before you and your companion are given your own sled to share the driving. You will spend a night in simple but cosy cabin in private room in your hosts' house at the kennels before another day's sledding taking you back to the hotel for the night.

Option 2 (4-day tour, cabin only) and Option 3 (6-day tour, cabin only)

These 4-day/3-night and 6-day/5-night tours are based for all nights at the husky farm and daily tours are taken to explore the local area. The farm has a real sense of timelessness combined with the modern facilities of electricity, running water and an indoor toilet. You will be introduced to the basics of mushing, with the first kilometres normally being driven by guide, then moving on to sharing the driving with your travel partner (perfect for chatting along the way or to take pictures!), and once you have gained your confidence handling the sled, you will be in control of your own dogsled and team of huskies if you wish.

The husky farm is located on the lakeshore in the forest with accommodation in double/twin room with fireplace. The cabin does not have shower, but there is a wood-fired sauna for private use right by the lake, which also heats water and provides opportunity to wash. The intrepid can take a dip in the icy water of the lake right outside the sauna!

This is a very personal experience where you will learn how it is to live like a musher, as the husky farm is home to your guide and the teams of dogs. As a private tour, this experience is very flexible and days can be added at either the hotel or husky farm.

Private Dog Sled Tours for Two in Taiga Forest is a wonderful mix of adventure, comfort, relaxation and (if you wish!) romance!

Option 1: 4-day tour (hotel + cabin) - Itinerary

NB: Please note that this tour can be extended with one or more extra days' sledding and accommodation in cabin at the kennels, or with extra nights at hotel before/after your tour. Please see under "Dates and Prices > Optional Extras" for details.

Day 1:

You will be met from Kajaani airport or train station and transferred (approx. 90 minutes) to your hotel for the night. Unwind after your journey in front of an open log fire in the lounge and enjoy dinner at the restaurant (included). The hotel has free use of sauna and hot-tub facilities. Massage and other treatments are available to book locally.

Day 2:

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be met by your guide and given extra warm clothes and a bag for you to use for your belongings needed for the night. Any luggage you do not need can be left at the hotel. Once you are ready, you will meet your team of huskies and your guide will take you through the basics of mushing until you are confident to start your journey.

You set off over a frozen lake for the first kilometre along the trail and then your route will take you into taiga forest. Initially, your guide will share your sled with you until you get the hang of it and then you and your companion will then share the sled together, taking it in turns to drive the sled. Lunch is enjoyed outdoors with a hot drink and you will then continue through the woods and over frozen peat bogs (marshland) arriving at the kennels to a comfortable cabin, located on a lakeshore in the wilderness, where you will be spending the night. Once at the cabin you have time to relax, talking through your day with a hot drink. A traditional wood-fired sauna next to the lake is available, before a roll in the snow if you're brave enough! You end your evening with a tasty dinner made with local ingredients. The cabin is shared with your hosts and accommodation there is in your own private room.

Day 3:

After breakfast at the cabin, you will harness up your dogs and then head back into the forest for a day's sledding and end your tour gliding over the frozen lake before arriving back at the hotel. Here you will say farewell to your new four-legged friends and enjoy a relaxing evening in the sauna before dinner and your last night.

Day 4:

Breakfast at the hotel before you are transferred back to Kajaani airport or train station for departure.

Option 2 (4-day tour, cabin only) and Option 3 (6-day tour, cabin only) - Itinerary

Exact arrangements for progression from riding as passenger/sharing sled/driving own sled are flexible depending on preference, ability and trail conditions. For both the 4-day and 6-day tours below, you will normally begin with guide driving the sled initially, progress to sharing sled with your travel partner and then, if you wish, to driving own sled.

Day 1:

You will be collected from Kajaani airport or train station and be transported to the simple but comfortable cabin (approx 90 minutes), which is home to the huskies and which will be your base for the next 5 nights. Dinner with your hosts and chance to talk through the tour ahead. Traditional wood-fired sauna by the lake is available each night of your stay.

Day 2:

After breakfast, you will be given some extra warm winter clothing and then meet your husky team, who will become your new, favourite four-legged friends. Your guide will take you through the basics and theory of dog sledding and then you will start your first day of exploring the local area and travel approx. 20km. You will normally beging the tour with guide driving for the first part, then with your guide leading up front, carving a way for you and your companion to steer the sled you are sharing with ease, stopping for lunch along the way.

Once back at the husky farm, you will help feed and care for the dogs before enjoying a relaxing evening in a wood-heated sauna and a delicious dinner.

Day 3:

Your route will continue to explore the forest and as your mushing skills improve you can enjoy the scenery and take in your surroundings. Your guide can help you learn to identify wildlife tracks such as wolf, wolverine, lynx and forest birds. Returning to the cabin, you will help feed the dogs and walk the huskies that have retired from the team. If any of the huskies appear to be a little stiff after their exertions, they may be taken in for a massage! And to soothe any aches you may have, a hot sauna is available as every evening to relieve your muscles, before another tasty dinner.

Day 4 (Option 2):

After breakfast you will be transferred to Kajaani airport or train station for departure.

Day 4 (Option 3):

As you should be quite a confident musher by this point, instead of sharing a sled you and your companion can now drive your own sleds with your own team of huskies if you wish. Today's trail will go further off the beaten track and experience traditional dog sledding on trails untouched by snowmobiles. This route leads you into even deeper forest of ancient trees and open peat bogs where you are likely to see wolverine tracks and birds typical to this forest such as Siberian Jay, Black Woodpecker and Capercaille.

Day 5 (Option 3):

Today you can choose either your favourite trail so far or go exploring somewhere new, depending on weather conditions. After your final day of dog sledding, you will return to the cabin to help with the huskies before relaxing for your last evening.

Day 6 (Option 3):

After breakfast you will be transferred to Kajaani airport or train station for departure.

Eco Info

This provider has a written environmental policy. Your local hosts lead a very low-impact lifestyle and much of the food served on the tour is organic and harvested wild from the immediate local area.

The dogs at the kennels are fed largely on fish. Offcuts from a local salmon fish-farm make effective and nutritious use of a waste product, and the dogs' diet is supplemented with an overabundant species of roach caught by hand nets in the lake adjacent to the kennels. This not only provides a sustainable and low-impact high quality food source, but also contributes to the conservation of the lake ecosystem, as removing this species helps to reduce the disturbance of sediment and combats eutrophication of the water caused by local forestry activities.

The Taiga Forest

The taiga forest, also known as the boreal or snowforest, is the world's largest biome and consists mostly of coniferous forest including pines, spruces and larches. It stretches virtually unbroken around the world, across Canada, Alaska and parts of the northern USA. In Europe it covers large parts of Sweden, Norway and Finland, some parts of Iceland, and much of Russia, as well as areas of Kazaskhstan, Mongolia and Japan.
