Dog Sledding Articles

Calling all mushers! Discover the adventure of life on the trail on a husky holiday in Sweden!

If you are looking for a winter holiday with a difference this year, how about a dog sledding adventure in Sweden? The season for our dog sledding holidays runs from December to April. A number of scheduled dog sled tours are offered on fixed dates throughout the season, ideal for solo travellers or couples. If you would like a private dog sledding tour, all our experiences can be booked by small groups on custom dates by arrangement - perfect for your very own husky holiday with friends or family! Nature Travels offers many ways to answer the Call of the Wild on a dogsledding holiday in Sweden, with seven different options to choose from.

For those who would like to combine the excitement of dog sledding with comfortable accommodation, we offer a range of experiences in the beautiful region of Jämtland in north-west Sweden. Family Husky Sledding Adventure is ideal for children and those who wish to get a taste for dogsledding without the commitment of an extended tour. Our Siberian Husky Dogsled Adventure is a wonderful choice for adults, combining comfort and excitement. We also offer three dog sledding tours in Jämtland based on winter camping - a unique experience! - Mushing in the Mountains, Dog Sledding and Winter Bushcraft and the challenging Dog Sledding Across Jämtland.

The vast wilderness of Lapland to the north is the location for our Northern Lights Dog Sledding in Lapland and Husky Mountain Expedition in Lapland, both adventurous but accessible 8-day dog sled tours with accommodation in cabins along the route - marvellous choices for those looking for an extended tour. The tours take place well inside the Arctic Circle, so there is also the added attraction of dog sledding in an area offering good chances to see a spectacular display of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis.

Dog sledding is a wonderful sport, and Sweden is a wonderful country for a husky holiday. Dog sledding in Sweden offers a great combination of outdoor adventure, nature experience and personal challenge - and a marvellous way to experience the beauty and tranquility of the winter mountain world, whether you choose a dogsled tour in the majestic mountain region of Jämtland or further north in the wilderness of Swedish Lapland. Many of the dog sledding trails run in areas with restricted access for snowmobiles, ensuring there is nothing to disturb the silence but the excited barking of your husky team straining to be off!

Nature Travels dog sledding holidays in Sweden are suitable for anyone in generally good physical condition, though the level of challenge varies considerably between tours and it is important to ensure you choose the most suitable experience for you.

Life on the trail can be demanding, but above all you will need a willingness to work with the huskies in your dogsled team, caring for them and earning their friendship during your tour. On all our expedition dog sledding holidays, each participant drives their own dogsled with 4-5 Alaskan Huskies or Siberian Huskies depending on the tour. For Family Husky Sledding Adventure, a shared sled is used. For participants on other tours who are not able or do not wish to drive their own sled, it may also be possible to arrange to share a sled.

You will be given full training and guidance in handling your dogsled before the tour from your local guide. Some strength and fitness is required when braking the sled or when it is necessary to step off the sled to run or "scoot" behind for short distances when travelling uphill, but you will be surprised how quickly you gain confidence and begin to develop the skills needed for dog sledding. You should be very proud of your progress as a musher by the end of your dog sledding holiday!
