Cross Country Skiing and Ski Touring in Sweden

Cross country skiing and ski touring have become increasingly popular in recent years, as travellers become more aware of the negative environmental impact of downhill resorts and discover the enormous potential of this quieter, less intrusive way to enjoy the beauty of the winter landscape.

Sweden is one of the world's top destinations for a cross country ski holiday or ski touring expedition, with thousands of kilometres of well-prepared tracks and waymarked trails for extended tours as well as endless possibilities for off-track adventures and wild winter camping. Nature Travels offers a range of cross country skiing holidays in Sweden, from family-friendly winter breaks to challenging ski touring expeditions.

If you have young children, have not skied before or would like to combine cross country skiing with other winter activities, basing your activities at a mountain station is an ideal option. An excellent choice for a winter family holiday, Winter Weeks in the Mountains is based at an award-winning mountain station in Dalarna, close to the border with Norway. The area offers extensive opportunities for self-guided cross country skiing on the network of prepared tracks, and it is also just a short climb to come above the treeline and out onto the wide expanse of the mountain plains for ski touring. If you wish to join a group, the station offers a programme of activities throughout the season which include guided cross country and ski touring day tours in the area. Guests can choose between self-catering accommodation or full board, and full equipment hire facilities are available. Though located in a very remote area, the station is also conveniently accessible, with direct buses running from both Gothenburg and Stockholm.

If you have some experience of cross country skiing but are yet to discover the challenge and adventure of mountain ski touring, you will find Discover Mountain Ski Touring in Lapland an ideal introduction to this marvellous sport. A 7-day experience combining guided day training tours from mountain station with a cabin-cabin expedition component, Discover Mountain Ski Touring will give you the opportunity to improve your technique and build your confidence for future extended tours under the tuition of your local guide.

For those with previous experience of mountain ski touring, we offer three more challenging, extended tours: Ski Touring on the King's Trail from Abisko to Kebnekaise, Ski Touring in the Mountains of Western Sweden and Ski Touring and Winter Mountaincraft in Jämtland.

Ski Touring on the King's Trail from Abisko to Kebnekaise takes you through the dramatic mountain landscape of Lapland into the shadow of Sweden's highest mountain, Mt. Kebnekaise, following the Kungsleden trail, one of Sweden's best-known hiking routes in summer. Accommodation is in mountain cabins and mountain station along the trail. One of the world's classic ski touring experiences and an adventure not to be missed!

Ski Touring in the Mountains of Western Sweden begins and ends at the same mountain station that is also the base for Winter Weeks in the Mountains. Led by an experienced mountain guide, the tour takes you across the border into Norway, with accommodation at mountain cabins and mountain stations along the route, before returning into Sweden. The tour is challenging, but also accessible, suitable for persons with some previous experience and in good physical condition.

Ski Touring and Winter Mountaincraft in Jämtland combines the enjoyment of an extended ski touring expedition with the additional challenge of winter camping and the opportunity to learn and practise mountaincraft skills including navigation, safety, avalanche assessment and nutrition. The tour is led by an experienced local mountain rescue guide and is offered as a private experience for groups of minimum 4 persons. As a private tour, the itinerary and level of challenge can be adapted to suit your needs and requirements, including the option to choose accommodation in mountain cabins along the route rather than wild winter camping. The standard 4-day experience can also be extended with additional days. Ski Touring and Winter Mountaincraft in Jämtland is a popular choice both for private groups and as an adventurous training expedition for Armed Forces.

Whether you are a family with young children looking to do some gentle cross country skiing as part of your family winter holiday, or an experienced tourer looking for a challenging ski touring expedition, you should find that one of the experiences above meets your requirements. If you have any questions or would like to discuss the suitability of a particular tour, please don't hesitate to contact us.
